I use open source tools for coding and designing graphics for websites. I use Vim for editing and writing code; and I use the GIMP and Inkscape for creating graphics. This site utilizes Wordpress, an open source content management system, for several pages and sections. I've attempted to integrate it seamlessly, but I don't use it for the entire site. I have used it for entire client sites, and Wordpress makes it easy for clients to update their site content at any time.
My site uses the new HTML5 and CSS3 specifications. These are supported at various levels from browser to browser, so my site may not look exactly the same in two different browsers. However, I have tested extensively, and the site certainly looks good in all modern browsers. I've used these new specifications carefully, and I have tried not to use something too experimental. I have hacks in place for Internet Explorer - even the latest version of IE has no support for new HTML5 elements or CSS3 styling.
The site looks best in Firefox 3.5 and Safari/Chrome, and works fine in Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8; as well as Firefox 3.0. The site will break in Firefox 2, so if you're still using that browser you should upgrade.
Because these technologies are not well-supported at this time, I do not yet use them in client sites, deferring instead to the better-supported XHTML (strict) and CSS 2 specifications.
